Water Heater Installation :: Step-by-Step Guide



There are times when we just need water heater repair. You can hire a plumber to do this task, but it’s possible to do the job on your own. Here’s how to install your own water heater.
  • The first thing you need to do is to turn off the water for the water heater.
  • On electric models, turn off the circuit breaker.
  • If you have a gas model turn off the gas at your meter or at the water heater.
Draining Your Water Heater Tank
  • Open some hot water faucets that are near your tank.
  • At the bottom of the water heater, connect a garden hose to your drain valve.
  • Put the other end over a drain hole or go to the curb & gutter near your home.
  • You want to open the valve slowly so it doesn’t end up clogging on you.
Disconnecting Your Utilities
  • If you have a gas unit, remove the gas line to the water heater.
  • On the electrical unit, shut off the breaker switch.
  • Next, turn off the cold water at the valve.
  • At the union, remove your hot water line.
  • The last step is to take off the vent pipe connection from your heater.
  • Once you have done all these steps, you’re ready to remove the old unit.

Water Heater Installation Tips To Follow

  • One you have drained and disconnected everything you can remove the older unit.
  • Make sure you clean the floor areas around the unit so the floor is ready for your new water heater.
  • Place shims under the legs of the new heater to get it level.
  • Ensure you install all the fittings that came with your new unit and be sure to read all instructions twice before you install it.
  • Install the temperature & pressure relief valve or t&p line.
  • Connect to your drain line.
  • On iron pipe fittings, use pipe dope and Teflon tape.
  • Follow local plumbing codes and install fittings per directions with heater.
Connecting Your Water Lines
  • Use flexible supply lines to make things easier for you.
  • If you don’t have a cold water shut-off valve already, make sure you install one.
  • To prevent damage to the unit and the pipe connections use dielectric unions.
  • On the galvanized fittings use Teflon tape and pipe dope.
Connecting the Gas or Electric Line (varies with your unit)
  • If you have an electric water heater, you want to connect your power to the water heater junction box.
  • For a gas unit connect the gas to your control valve.
  • To ease the installation of a gas unit, use a flexible gas line.
  • Turn on your gas and spray some soapy water from a bottle on the connections.
  • If any bubbles appear, you want to tighten these connections as your leaking a bit of gas.
Putting on the Vent Pipe
  • If you have a gas model, you need to install the vent pipe.
  • Over the water heater flue install the draft diverter.
  • Make sure you check the documentation for parts and detailed instructions for your unit.
  • Follow local codes and instruction to install the vent pipe.
Once you have connected everything, fill it with water and then turn your water heater on.
  • Turn on the cold water valve for your water heater.
  • Close all the hot water faucets that you opened prior to the water heater installation.
  • Open your relief valve and when you get water you have a full tank.
  • Open your gas valve and make sure you light the pilot. If you have an electric model just reset the circuit breaker.
  • You want to set the thermostat at between 110 and 130 degrees.
